Last Thursday was a beautiful day for a hike in the woods around Duxbury. With Stick Season underway, there are still some lovely patches of color to enjoy.

Country Store Tour - Lake Elmore
The only visible retail business in beautiful Lake Elmore, Vermont, the Elmore Store has been in continuous operation since the early 1800s and also serves as the town's post office, gas station, and the Fire Warden's office. It sits along the shore of beautiful Lake Elmore and across the street from the one-room Elmore School. Best feature: a huge wheel of Cabot Cheddar from which customers can slice wedges to take home.

Craftsbury Old Home Day
A few shots from Craftsbury Common yesterday morning during Old Home Day. The baby highland cattle from Greenfield's were having their first outing. Awwww!

August Brings Surprises in the Forest
The alien-looking Indian Pipe is decorating the forest floor these days. How oddly beautiful it is.

Flags in Newport
It is very common to see the Vermont state flag flying together with both the Canadian and US flags. It's not quite another country up here, but almost.

Seagull in Newport
As we were sitting along the waterfront in Newport, looking north across Lake Memphremagog at the mountains in Canada, this beautiful fellow joined us for a bit. All of were happy about the gorgeous summer-like weather.

Guest Shot - "The Moose That Schussed!"
I just had to ask Greg at FIS for permission to repost this picture of a moose checking out the early morning slopes in Stowe this week. What a great shot!

Red
We had a wonderful sunny day today, and caught the giant red wooden sculptures at the library and Helen Day Art Center in Stowe Village. I love the contrast between the modern art and the 1861 building.

Minding the Store
We spent the frigid sub-zero afternoon Saturday hunting for treasures at Awreatha's Garage antique store in Jeffersonville. It sits behind and underneath El Zorro Mexican Restaurant on Edwards Rd. (formerly The Red Fox Alpine Lodge, originally built as a church in the mid-1800s), and boasts a wonderfully eclectic inventory.
Skidds - a sweet and not-too-nosy tabby - greets you from his warm chair as you enter and reach the bottom of the stairs. He may hop down and try to help you find that "something" you are looking for, but will be back in his chair before too long.
